Santa Luzia in Ria Formosa Natural Park

Santa Luzia in Ria Formosa Natural Park

Santa Luzia is a pretty and characterful village in Ria Formosa Natural Park.

The closest beach is called Praia da Terra Estreita.

Santa Luzia overlooks the lagoons and waterways of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which is a haven for migratory birds and small marine life. On the seaward side of Ria Formosa are some of the quietest beaches of the Algarve and these pristine beaches can be reached by small ferries that depart from the harbour.

Praia da Terra Estreita

Santa Luzia is situated behind the sandbar of Tavira island. Extending the length of the sandy island are some of the best beaches in the region. The beach closest to Santa Luzia is called Praia da Terra Estreita, which is accessible only by ferry from the harbour. The frequency of ferry services is seasonal (regular departures take place from May until mid-September) but there are also water taxis for those who miss departures or are visiting in low season.

Santa Luzia is only 3km southwest of Tavira and can be reached easily along the Algarve Cycle Path, which is perfect for those wishing to explore at a leisurely pace. This route has been purpose-built, following the quiet R151 road, and is perfectly safe for those of all cycling abilities. Bikes can be hired from either Tavira or Santa Luzia.

The octopus

The fishing fleet of Santa Luzia uses traditional and sustainable methods of fishing for the octopus which have barely altered in generations. The fishing technique uses clay pots that are lowered onto the seabed and the unwitting octopus are tempted to swim in but are unable to escape.

During the day these clay pots to catsh the octopus can be seen drying along the harbour front or piled up on the fishing boats.

Praia do Barril

If you are visiting Santa Luzia in Ria formosa do not forget to visit Praia do Barril! Praia do Barril is one of the best beaches to visit in the area of Tavira. It is mostly visited by families with children and tourists.

In general, Praia do Barril is not very crowded. It is actually one of the quietest beaches in this area of the Algarve. Only near the entrance point it can get a bit crowded during the summer. However, the beach is very big and provides enough space for visitors that are willing to walk a couple of minutes. Even in the peak of summer, you can have the beach all to yourself if you walk a bit.

To get there you can either go for a nice walk or try the beautiful red tourist train to reach the beach and take the short train journey as part of the experience. We love it to simply go for a long walk there.

As soon as you get there, you can see the remains of the former tuna fishing village. There are more than 100 rusting anchors in the sand, arranged in rows. There is also an old tuna fishing boat near the beach. This fascinating sight is known as the anchor cemetery of Praia do Barril.

The beach is spotless, you can walk for miles or sit within yards of arriving.
