Rainy Days

Even though the Algarve boasts more than 300 days of blissful sunshine, winter does like to make a guest appearance—with rain included. From roughly November through March, you can expect some wet days. Luckily, it’s rarely a non-stop downpour. Think of it more as a dramatic sky performance: clouds roll in, do their thing, then politely move aside to let the sun shine through again.

The saying “There is no bad weather, only the wrong clothing” certainly rings true here—but rain and constant humidity don’t just influence your wardrobe. They also affect how you choose your home abroad and how you care for it. Winter dampness can impact everything from sleek modern apartments to charming rustic quintas across the Algarve.

At Lemon Tree Homes, we’ve lived through all the seasons ourselves. That experience allows us to guide our clients toward homes with the right conditions—not just for summer living, but for year-round comfort.

Understanding Mold (or “Bolor”) in the Algarve

Preventing mold during rainy winter months is essential, and it often requires a layered approach. Many Algarve homes are built with thick stone or concrete walls—beautiful and sturdy, but not always insulated. These walls absorb moisture, creating cool surfaces where condensation loves to settle in and make itself at home.

To keep your space dry and comfortable, indoor humidity should ideally stay below 60–70%. This can be managed with a combination of dehumidification, heating, and smart ventilation.

Practical Tools That Make a Big Difference

  • Dehumidifiers: An absolute must. A high-capacity compressor or desiccant dehumidifier helps remove excess moisture. Aim to maintain humidity between 40–60%.
  • Hygrometers: A small but mighty tool. For around €5–10, you can easily monitor indoor humidity and act before things get too damp.
  • Window or Shower Squeegees: A simple morning habit—wiping condensation off windows—can stop mold before it even starts.
  • Heaters: Most newer homes have AC units with heating functions, but if not, small electric heaters work well. Towel heaters in bathrooms are especially helpful to reduce condensation on cold surfaces.

Daily Habits for Mold Prevention

  • Ventilation: Open windows for 5–10 minutes twice a day to create a cross-breeze. Avoid leaving them tilted open for hours in winter—it sounds helpful, but it actually invites more damp air inside.
  • Laundry: If possible, dry clothes outdoors. If not, use a sealed room with a dehumidifier or a dryer.
  • Bathrooms & Kitchens: Run exhaust fans when cooking or showering, keep bathroom doors closed during showers, and wipe down tiles afterward.
  • Furniture Placement: Keep furniture 5–10 cm away from external walls to allow proper airflow.
  • Temperature Control: Aim for a consistent indoor temperature between 18°C and 21°C.

Long-Term Prevention Tips

  • Keep gutters clean and ensure water drains away from the house.
  • Regularly check roofs and chimney areas for leaks—some stay hidden for months.
  • Consider anti-mold paint, readily available at local hardware stores.
  • Inspect windows and sliding doors for gaps and install seals (“burletes”) to keep damp air out.

Dealing with Existing Mold

If mold does appear, don’t panic. Effective solutions include hydrogen peroxide (3%), cleaning vinegar (vinagre de limpeza), diluted bleach, or commercial anti-mold products (produto anti-bolor). Heavily affected textiles or carpets may need to be removed to fully resolve the issue.

And remember—rainy days are rarely all-day affairs. When the clouds take a break, step outside, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy the Algarve as it was meant to be enjoyed.
