How to truly create a home in your new environment far away from familiar surroundings

The decision is made, you are moving abroad, you found your temporary living quarters, you are ready for a major life change.

Now comes the question on what to bring, what to donate, sell or store and how you will create a home away from everything that’s familiar.

What makes a home a home and not just a structure that houses us? It’s something different for everyone but what is in common for everyone is that it is always a combination of emotional and personal factors. Home means safety, comfort, belonging.

Some people say goodbye to all their belongings and want to start fresh but is that always the best idea? What if you have a favorite piece of art that has a special meaning to you, a certain book series, a favorite cooking utensils or a cozy blanket?

Dwellings in Portugal aren’t very big therefore furniture that may have made your home in your original country cozy might not quite fit the footprint over here. Your taste may have shifted a bit over time. So, why not try out a bit of a different style?

Incorporating a bit of Portuguese culture like local pottery and European style no fuss furniture with clean lines could contribute to creating a new home that represents you in this chapter of your life.

There are many options here in Tavira to create a new home that is you. Tavira Plaza has a few options like Hôma, Oliveira and Jysk, a Danish retailer. T-Movel is another furniture retailer off of N125. If you are looking for unique items, you may want to stroll into the locally owned Loja do Despago, a store with a mix of vintage and modern art and design, as well as classics.

The many small gift shops around Tavira offer local items like linens and pottery that can give your new home its unique signature.

And if all fails, there is always IKEA near Loulé at MAR shopping.

From experience, I would say bring a few items with you. When arriving in a foreign country with a new environment where almost nothing is familiar it is good to have a bit of familiarity to bring you comfort.

So wrap yourself in your favorite throw that traveled with you to a new land, drink a fragrant tea from your chipped mug that you had since your uni days and look at your favorite art and take a deep breath. You made it.

There is always time to create new traditions, rituals, and community.
